Libya hosts mini summit on Sudan, Chad
Libya-Sudan, Politics, 2/7/2006
Libyan officials stressed on Monday that the Libyan leader Muammar al-Qathafi will host a mini summit Wednesday in order to eliminate tension between Sudan and Chad as each one accuses the other of backing rebels.
Qathafi will be presiding over the meeting which will be attended by the leaders of Sudan, Chad, and Congo which presides over the African Union, and Burkina Faso, head of the countries of the desert and coast union.
On Monday the five ministers of the five said states met to prepare for the summit. The Libyan foreign minister Abdul Rahman Shalqam said in a meeting for the ministers that the meeting aims at eliminating tension between Chad and Sudan and to reach practical solution to overcome negative issues between the two countries.
For his part, the Sudanese minister of state for foreign affairs al-Samani al-Wasila said that technical studies are working in Tripoli to prepare for the mini summit, and it was not clear if it will be held in Tripoli or in Sert.
Diplomats doubt that Libya can achieve progress in this summit after other African leaders failed to achieve progress in this matter.
Chad accuses Sudan of supporting rebels seeking to topple President Idris deibi and attacked Chad's border city of Adre in December, 2005. Chad says that the rebels started as from Darfur and admitted they had training camps there in the past.
Tribes are spread on the two sides of the border. Deibi himself seized the authority in a coupe, supported by Sudan, and he carried out as from Darfur in 1990.
