Security developments in Iraq

Field developments in Iraq showed tight security measures especially in the capital Baghdad and each of the two cities of Karbala and Najaf which will witness the ceremonies marking Ashoura day anniversary in which the Shiite sect celebrates on the 10th of the current Hijra month of Muharram.
Some 8,000 policemen were deployed in Karbala and it was designated as a blocked city where security forces carried out additional inspection points. The areas where the Shiite majority live witnesses intensive inspection patrols.
Karbala and Baghdad witnessed in 2004 attacks on the anniversary of Ashoura that resulted in killing 170 persons and hundreds of wounded.
In other field developments, one policeman was killed and another was injured in Karkouk city to the north of Baghdad at the hands of gunmen. The police found two bodies south of Baghdad.
In Falluja, one Iraqi soldier was killed and other two injured in a roadside bomb. In Musil, two civilians were injured when one car run by a suicide bomber exploded near one American patrol.
In Salman Beck city, southeast of Baghdad, the police said that two policemen were killed and seven injured when a booby trapped car went off near a police inspection barrier.
In the same context, the police announced it found two bodies for two Shiite men killed by bullets on the highway which links Baghdad to al-Taji in the north.
This came two days after the bodies of 14 Sunnis killed by fire were found north of the capital Baghdad. Iraqi security sources on Monday announced the killing of nine Iraqis including the director of a prison for the ministry of justice, one engineer and two policemen and injuring other 13 including five policemen in various attacks in Baghdad, Karkouk to the north and al-Madaen and al-Hella to the south.
In another development, the Iraqi government said on Monday that 53 Iraqi detainees were released within a plan started by the government in coordination with the coalition forces at a time when reconsidering the issues of all detainees in the Iraqi and American jails is being looked at.
