Ruler of Kuwait consultations for a new prime minister
Kuwait, Politics, 2/6/2006
The ruler of Kuwait Sheikh Sabah al-Ahmad al-Jaber al-Sabah on Sunday started consultations to appoint a new prime minister and for the new government.
In this context, Sheikh al-Sabah met with the chairman of the Kuwaiti Ummah council Jasem al-Khurafi and three of his predecessors Ahmad Zeid al-Sarhan, Muhammad Youssef al-Adasani and Ahmad Abdul Aziz al-Sadoun.
In press statements, al-Khurafi said that these consultations are stipulated on the Kuwaiti constitution but he gave no more details.
Sheikh Sabah also met with prominent figures in al-Sabah family in Kuwait. He is also expected to meet with other political figures before appointing a prime minister in the few coming days.
The government, which was presided over by Sheikh Sabah since 2003, when the two posts of the crown prince and the prime minister was seperated, gave its resignation last Monday after Sheikh Sabah became a ruler of Kuwait.
The opposition and parliamentarians call for keeping separate the two posts of the prime minister and the crown prince so as the parliament to continue questioning the government freely.
Sheikh Sabah (76 year old) took his constitutional oath on January 29th after the parliament removed his predecessor Sheikh Saad al-Abdullah al-Salem al-Sabah from his post for health reasons. Sheikh Saad assumed the presidency of Kuwait for few days following the death of Sheikh Jabber al-Ahmad al-Sabah.
