Iran restarts nuclear fuel enrichment programs
Iran-UN, Politics, 2/4/2006
The International Atomic Energy Agency board voted today to have Iran reported to the UN Security Council, because Iran has failed to convince the agency that Iran's program is purely for peaceful purposes and called Iran to "re-establish full and sustained suspension of all enrichment-related and reprocessing activities, including research and development, to be verified by the Agency."
Iran, as it promised it would do to resume full and unhindered nuclear nuclear fuel enrichment activities, if such action is taken against Iran, announced swiftly the start of these activities. Fox News TV reported that after the AIEA decision, Iran's president gave his orders to start nuclear enrichment activities.
The decision of the IAEA showed, what some saw, as the true scale of collusion of interest against Iran, and that the negotiations which have been mere tactical devise had served to undermine Iran's claim to its absolute rights, by the merely agreeing to have such negotiations.
Iran's president's swift decision and reaction to the AIEA decision may be seen as a strong shift in this regard, and that the resolute position that Iran threatened to take will be the only clear option to defend Iran's rights, by taking the offensive, instead of playing defensive, and being slowly strangulated in the coming process.
Meantime, the US announced, according to a New York Times report, a major initiative to start producing and selling enriched nuclear fuel to other countries, and invited Russia to be the major business partner in this effort. Such a program can serve dual effect for the big powers of preventing other nations from developing nuclear energy fuel for themselves and having to buy it from others and be dependent on them for it, while at the same time preventing these other countries from developing nuclear weapons. By so doing, the big powers can ensure a monopoly on a new business opportunity and major source of future energy, and they can protect their monopoly with their own nuclear weapons and threats as they have already demonstrated, under the pretext that they are guarding against the potential spread of nuclear weapons.
Iran said there is resentment and fear from the great success and independence their Islamic nation and revolution has shown and achieved. The Iranian president said the world does not live in "the middle ages" anymore, and that Iran will destroy this "colonialist" mentality and behavior of those aiming to keep it subservient. Iran has faced in the past enormous challenges and managed to succeed and defy the odds, despite the many enemies that aimed to keep it down. It remains to be seen if it will do it again. Iran said referral of Iran to the Security Council will be a historic mistake. Iran's reaction may indicate Iran is about to show this.
