New Kerala India: CPI objects to US caution on Syrian oil field project
Syria-India, Politics, 1/30/2006

New Kerala India reported: The Communist Party of India (Marxist) on Saturday expressed strong objections to the United States cautioning the Indian Government on acquiring an oil field in Syria in partnership with China.

New Kerala India reported: The Polit Bureau of the CPI (M) strongly objects to the United States asking the Indian Government not to proceed to acquire an oil field in Syria in partnership with China, a press release from the Polit Bureau of the CPI (M) on Saturday said.

New Kerala India reported: The release further said: The United States has already objected to the Iran-Pakistan-India gas pipeline. It is opposed to the India-China collaboration in the energy sector and it expects India to join the US game plan of targeting Iran and Syria.

New Kerala India reported: US embassy spokesman David Kennedy has said the US views on Syria are well known. A communication was made from our side to the Indian government early December conveying our objections to the oil deal. Kennedy was referring to an aide memoire listing Washingtons objections that was handed over to the Indian government by US diplomats.

In December last year, the Oil and Natural Gas Corporation Videsh Ltd (OVL) and the China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC) jointly purchased a 37 per cent stake in the al-Furat oil and gas fields in Syria from Petro-Canada for 573 million dollars.
