American losses in Iraq effecting overall US military capabilities
Iraq-USA, Military, 1/27/2006
A statement by the American army announced the killing of one of its soldiers and injuring another in an attack by one explosive south of Baghdad on Thursday.
The groups of al-Ashreen (1920s) revolution in Iraq, in a televised recording, claimed responsibility for the attack in a bomb against one American military vehicle near Haditha city.
This comes while the Pentagon is being exposed to more criticism on ways of running the military operations in Iraq and Afghanistan. The US defence secretary tried to refute what was stated in the reports of two former senior officials that the deployment of the American land forces on a large scale in Iraq and Afghanistan might weaken the ability of the army to react to any likely attack against the USA.
In a press conference in Washington, the US defense secretary said that any person can see that the opposite is true, stressing that his forces are able to perform their mission and were not broken.
However, a report prepared by a group chaired by the former defense secretary William Perry spoke of the weak planning for operations for Iraq's stability and the few number of soldiers to whom the mission is assigned, the lack of certain equipment and protection for the deployed forces. Experts said that the armed and the marine forces can not continue the same rhythm of operations to the end without being actually damaging their capabilities.
Meantime, a Guradian.co.uk report yesterday said that the US army is being stretched verfy thin to the near breaking point a report commissioned by the Pentagon says, adding "the army could not sustain the current pace of deployments - which was likely in the end to discourage recruitment." "The army ... cannot sustain the force levels desired to sustain the momentum needed to break the back of the insurgent movement," the report says.
