UN helicopter crashed in Darfur

The UN envoy in Sudan, Yan Brunik, said that a UN helicopter crashed on Murra mountain in Darfur, when it was on a mission to evacuate 36 relief workers.

Brunik said he does not know the fate of the plane crew, and also can not confirm if the plane crashed or was shot down, but he talked about a fighting taking place in the area.

On the other hand, the new president of the African Union, President of the republic of Congo Dennis Ngeiso, said that the Union welcomes the participation of a UN force in the peace keeping operations in Darfur but on the ground to support the African forces and to be under the leadership of the African Union.

Ngeiso, who presides over the Union, said that the file of Darfur should remain under the responsibility of the African Union, considering that the UN group will understand the need for that.

Earlier this month, the UN said that it wants a peace keeping force in Darfur of soldiers of the USA and the European Union but Sudan opposed the idea of having non African forces.
