Arab lawyers reject pressures on Syria
Regional-Syria, Politics, 1/24/2006

Members of the Arab Lawyers Unions ( ALU) 22nd Conference meeting in Damascus on Monday sent a letter to UN Secretary General Kofi Annan through the UN mission in Damascus condemning pressure on Syria and calling for avoiding any chaos or instability in the region.

The letter, signed by President of the ALU Sameh Ashour, its Secretary General Ibrahim al-Simlali and Chairman of the Conference Walid al-Tish, said the Arab lawyers meeting in Damascus strongly protest against the pressures on Syria and attempts to interfere in its internal affairs as such acts fully contradict the UN Charter and the international laws.

President of ALU Ashour told reporters after delivering the letter that we officially express our protest against the international approach which adopts double-standard policy. We protest their stances towards Syria and the reckless measures taken by the UN bodies like the Security Council which bas been turned into a tool in American hands.

He added that we want to use this opportunity to announce protest and rejection to the irresponsible stance represented by politically exploiting the assassination of Hariri to hurt Syria and bring it down to its knees. We have come to say that Syria will never surrender, retreat or accept such pressures.

We will allow nobody to violate Syria's national sovereignty. We are for the international investigation committee into the assassination of Hariri if it really seeks to reveal the truth and uncover the killers, Ashour stressed.

He also criticized international indifference over the resolutions taken by the UN Security Council on the Israeli acts of aggression, occupation and massacres.

Ashour reacted to certain voices which criticized the stances taken by the Lawyers Unions Conference, saying that such voices by critics represent weakness, because the Conference has revealed their real intentions. They felt that the lawyers have managed to address the real Lebanese public and honest citizens who are ready to sacrifice for their country.

He added that the speech by President Bashar al-Assad before the Conference on Saturday has managed to reach to the Lebanese man of the street in a way that greatly affected those who trumpet the American process in Lebanon.
