African union summit starts deliberations today in al-Khartoum
Regional-Sudan, Politics, 1/23/2006

Works of the 6th summit of the African union open today in Khartoum, Sudan, amid a heated debate on the nomination of the host country to preside it for the coming phase

The Sudanese President Omar Hassan al-Bashir said earlier that the success of the African summit is more important than the question of his country's nomination for the presidency of the union. The Sudanese news agency quoted al-Bashir as saying that "Sudan is concerned with the success of the summit " and this is important more than any thing including Sudan's presidency for the Union.

Meantime, the Sudanese foreign minister Lam Acol expressed his confidence that the summit will agree on Sudan's presidency for the African union- which is currently led by Nigeria- for the next session.

The leaders of five African states which are Sudan, Egypt, Libya, Nigeria and Chad discussed on Sunday late evening on the sideline of the African summit the issue of nominating Sudan for this position.

The summit due to open today discussed issues pertinent to security, stability and development in Africa, especially education, culture and sciences issues, on line with the continent traditional heritage, as well as the continent's vision towards the question of reform of the UN and discussing the proposal of founding the United states of Africa, establishing the African government and needed staff, and revision of areas of tensions and conflicts in Africa.

It is also expected that conditions in the Ivory Coast to be on the agenda of the summit with the return back of sudden tension, as supporters of the regime demonstrated violently demanding the evacuation of the UN forces.

The African leaders, on the other hand have to approve the budget of 1006 and discuss the reports on reforming the UN and taking a common position concerning the immigration issue.

The summit will also discuss the establishment of an African Bourse and a Fund in the African Union in order to eliminate oil price increase results on the poor African countries.
