Bulgaria rejects compensating Libyan AIDS visctims
Libya-Bulgaria, Politics, 1/23/2006

Bulgaria has refused to abide by the results of the current negotiations in the Libyan capital Tripoli over compensating Libyan children affected by AIDS/HIV virus as a result of injecting them by Bulgarian nurses, according to the documents of the case debated to the Libyan judiciary.

The Bulgarian foreign minister said that the current talks in Tripoli on establishing an international fund to compensate the Libyan children is not obligatory on the Bulgarian government, noting that a non governmental organization is negotiating with the Libyans.

The Bulgarian minister considered that the needed money to be compensated, estimated at 4.3 billion Euros, exceed his country's capability, noting that his government knows about the current negotiations which are attended by European and American diplomats.

On January 12, the Bulgarian foreign minister announced that his country will not take part financially in the international fund "because the Bulgarian nurses are not guilty," but his country will contribute with qualifyied doctors and treat the affected children.

Worthy mentioning that families of the victims demand a financial compensation of 10 million Euros for every casualty and / or advanced treatment inside and outside Libya.

The Libyan side considers the fund as a form of compensations for the families involved, while Bulgaria considers it as in the course of the international efforts for humanitarian aids.
