Lebanese rejection for statements of President al-Assad on Shabaa farms
Lebanon-Syria, Politics, 1/23/2006
The Lebanese parliamentary majority which opposes the Syrian intervention in Lebanon rejected statements made by the Syrian President Bashar al-Assad in which he said that Beirut and not Damascus has to determine the Lebanese identity of the Shabaa Farms, which is situated on the triangle of the Syrian- Lebanese and Israeli border.
The Lebanese parliamentarian Antoine Zahra said in conclusion of a meeting representing "March 14 forces", that are opposed to Syria, that it is sufficient that the Syrian government proposes a statement confirming that a part to the west to the Lebanese Shebaa Farm is Lebanese and the eastern part is Syrian.
Beirut asks for a support from Damascus to maintain solidarity on Shabaa farms which was occupied by Israel in 1967 and is considered by the UN a Syrian sector.
In a speech he delivered at the inauguration of the Arab bar association in Damascus on January 20, al-Assad said that the request of the Lebanese government to demarcate borders in Shabaa Farms is "an Israeli request" considering that this request is directed against Syria.
