Iraqi elections results show need for coalition government
Iraq, Politics, 1/21/2006

According to the preliminary results of the Iraqi elections, the Shiite coalition won the first position by getting 128 seats, not getting overwhelming majority to form a government. A matter which will oblige it to ally with other lists in order to choose the President of the Republic and form the next government.

Next came the Kurdish list with 53 seats and the Sunni al-Tawafuk front with 44 seats. The Iraqi National List led by Eyad Allawi won 25 seats and was followed by the Iraqi Front For National Dialogue led by Saleh al-Mutlaq with 11 votes and The Liberation And Reconciliation Bloc led by Mashaan al-Jabouri with three seats, the Kurdistani Islamic Union of 5 seats and the list close to the Shiite leader Muqtada al-Sader won two seats. One seat goes to each of the list of Mithal al-Alousi for the Iraqi nation, the Yazidin, Turkman and the Christian al-Rafeydeen list.

Senior official in the united coalition Abbas al-Bayati said that serious talks will be start in Baghdad today to form the government. Saleh al-Mutlaq said that the Sunnis will take part if they can reach with their "brothers" an agreement on a national project to ensure the unity of Iraq.

Member of the Iraqi commission Safwat Rasheed expected in a press conference that these are not yet final results to be ratified by the end of next week by the special judicial department in the commission.
