Mubarak receives German foreign minister

Egypt's President Hosni Mubarak yesterday met in Egypt Foreign Minister of Germany Frank-Walter Steinmeier on a two day visit to discuss bilateral relations and the situation in the Middle East.
After the meeting, Steinmeier said he and President Mubarak reviewed events in the Middle East, esecialy the Palestinian-Israeli conflict in view of the forthcoming Palestinian legislative elections
Steinmeier said Germany opposes Hamas participation in elections if Hamas does not renounce violence.
Steinmeier said The EU-3 (Germany, UK and France) want Iran to stop its uranium enrichment program. It is not clear if these countries are asserting that uranium enrichment is illegal under the nuclear non-proliferation treaty.
Steinmeier met with Arab League (AL) Secretary-General Amr Moussa. Moussa said that the League opposes nuclear programs not intended for peaceful purposes, saying there is only one country which has a nuclear weapons and the rest of the world turns a blind eye, a reference to Israel. "That country's policy is totally against international law and contravenes international agreements," Moussa said.
"We do not view a nuclear Israel in the context of the Arab-Israeli conflict but as a Middle Eastern country that must abide by the nuclear non- proliferation treaty," Moussa added.
