Egypt, Politics, 1/20/2006
A government report noted that "Safwat el-Sherif, the Egyptian Shura Council Speaker and the head of the committee of parties affairs, Thursday called for holding an emergency meeting to discuss all memos, letters and documents received by the committee regarding a newly surfacing row inside al-Wafd party."
The documents were submitted by acting leader of Egypt's opposition
al-Wafd party Mahmoud Abaza and removed chairman, Nuuman Gumaa, who is defying the decision.
Sherif said the committee would meet on Saturday to review the current rift between the two sides. Mufid Shehab, the Minister of Affairs of the Shura Council, is a member of the committee.
The report noted that "The removed chairman left the party headquarters, winding up a sit-in, he started on Wednesday evening following a decision by the board to consider him as good as gone..Angry Gumaa dismissed the decision as null and void and said that (in his capacity as the party chairman) he would freeze the membership of Abaza, Munir Fakhri Abdel-Nour and Mohammed Sarhan,"
