Syria expels two Moroccans trying to join al-Qaida in Iraq
Syria-Iraq, Politics, 1/18/2006

A source close to the Moroccan security forces said that the Syrian authorities expelled two Moroccans living illegally illegally in the country and were suspected of trying to join the lines of al-Qaida organization in Iraq.

The source explained that the two men were dispatched to Casablanca city last week and they will be brought before an investigation judge.

The French language Moroccan daily Liberation, which is close to the government, on Monday published news on evacuating the two Moroccans, noting that their expulsion came as a result of leads from confessions made by detainees in Spain.

The paper indicated that the Spanish police detained on January 10 some 21 Islamists suspects in Madrid accused of recruiting fighters for "al-Jihad Qaida in Iraq" organization led by Abu Musab al-Zarqawi.

The paper explained that the two Moroccans are members in the Islamic group for Maghreb fighters.
