Canceling some results of Iraqi elections
Iraq, Politics, 1/17/2006

Concerning political developments in Iraq, the Independent Higher Commission For The Elections canceled the results of 227 ballot boxes in the framework of its investigation into the protest by political entities into alleged fraud and illegal acts in the elections.

In a press conference in Baghdad, member of the commission Abdul Hussein Hindawi announced in a press conference in Baghdad that the results of elections of 53 voting center were canceled because of the huge number of votes in it.

He explained that these violations, which were monitored in the parliamentary elections of mid December, were less than the elections of January 30, 2005. He added that the commission received some 1985 complaints of which it found out that 58 only are grave and serious, noting that 25% of the serious complaints were in Baghdad governorate.

On the other hand, the official in the commission Adel al-Lami stressed that the final results will be announced next Friday. The cancelation of these boxes will have no effect on the final results of the elections as elections were held in 31,000 ballot centers.

Waiting for the final results, difficult negotiations continue between the political forces over the formation of the next government, amid varied stances over several issues including the question of the federalism.

The Interim Iraqi President Jalal al-Talibani stressed the need of involving the Arab Sunni in the next Iraqi government and not to confine it to the Shiite and the Kurds as is the case with the current expired Iraqi government.
