Lebanon-Palestine, Local, 1/14/2006
Lebanese government commissioner, the assistant at the military court in Beirut, judge Ahmad Oweidat, said that Lebanon addressed accusations on Friday against 13 detainee suspected to be members in al-Qaida organization of planning for "terrorist attacks."
The Lebanese judge also explained that the attorney included accusations of falsifying special documents and possessing and transporting unlicensed weapons. Oweidat gave no additional details, but said that the suspects will be brought to the first military judge investigator for more interrogation.
For its part, Lebanese security sources said that the authorities arrested the accused men two weeks ago in various areas and many of them were carrying false Lebanese passports and weapons. According to these sources, the detainees are seven Syrians, three Lebanese, one Saudi, one Palestinian and one Jordanian.
Worthy mentioning that al-Jihad Qaida in Iraq led by Abu Musab al-Zarqawi claimed responsibility in a statement on the Internet on December 27, 2005 for the launching of missiles against Israel from south Lebanon.
The missile attack was followed by Israeli jets attacks of a training base for the People's Front For The Liberation Of Palestine- General Command in al-Naema area, south Beirut.
Al-Qaida organization does not launch direct attacks from Lebanon, but the security authorities accuse it of using allied organizations in order to recruit Lebanese and Palestinian refugee groups and to send them to the war in Iraq.
The Lebanese authorities accused a small armed group of having relations with al-Qaida and of a failed attempt to blow up the Italian embassy in Beirut in 2004.
