Sharon still unconscious
Israel, Local, 1/13/2006

The Israeli prime minister Ariel Sharon will undergo a new surgery at Hadassa hospital in Jerusalem with the aim to remove an interim tube implanted in the brain to dispose of blood.

Haaretz reported today that "Sharon was not showing any signs Friday that he was regaining consciousness, although doctors have been trying to get him out of his induced coma since Monday."

The doctors say his situation is still in a critical situation but stable, according to the last statement by the hospital.

Sharon's doctors warned against extreme optimism over the chances of his recovery, stressing that he will remain for months in hospital. The medical team continues to reduce the amount of drug given to Sharon in their most courageous step so far to wake him from the coma and assess the damage inflected in his brain as a result of the stroke he had.

Generally speaking, doctors agree that he will survive but they said he will not resume work quickly or may not be able to resume it. A spokesman for the hospital said that his heart is natural.

Concerning the political situation, a spokesman for the Israeli government said that the American president George W. Bush made o Thursday a telephone call with the Israeli acting prime minister Ehud Olmert for the first time since he assumed the affairs of running the administration of the government.

Olmert informed the US president on the health condition of Sharon and the political situation in Israel and the current preparations for the Palestinian elections due on January 25th.
