Germany denies its secret service assisted US in Iraq war
Iraq-Germany, Politics, 1/12/2006
Germany's BND foreign intelligence agency actively aided US troops during its Iraq war in spring 2003 despite Berlin's repeated remarks it had no role in the conflict, the German media said Thursday, IRNA reported.
BND agents reportedly helped identify an American bombing target in a Baghdad suburb where former Iraqi president Saddam Hussein was believed to be staying at that time, according to the daily Sueddeutsche Zeitung and the public NDR television network.
In preview of a programme to be broadcast later in the day, a former US military official confirmed to NDR about the BND's role in assisting the Americans in the bombings, saying it was "very important for the bombings on that day."
Meanwhile an unidentified BND spokesman while confirming the presence of German secret service agents in Baghdad during the 2003 Iraq war, denied the report as "distorted and untrue."
