Khaddam: al-Assad made the decision to assassinate Hariri
Syria-Lebanon, Politics, 1/11/2006
Former Syrian vice president Abdul Halim Khaddam escalated accusation against the current Syrian President Bashar al-Assad saying al-Assad was the one who issued the order to assassinate the former Lebanese prime minister Rafiq al-Hariri.
Khaddam said in statements to the French Europe-1 radio that he is fully convinced that Bashar al-Assad is the one who gave his order. He explained that he had informed the chairman of the UN investigation committee into the murder of Hariri, the resigned Detlev Mehlis and members of the committee with whom he had met in Paris recently, that such a decision to assassinate Hariri can only be taken by the President of the State.
Khaddam added "there is no one officer in the security system that can make this decision on his own, because this requires a lot of resources."
