Syria calls UN commission to protect Syrian under Israeli occupation from deportation
Syria-Israel, Politics, 1/9/2006

The UN Human Rights Commissioner, Louise Arbor, received a letter from the Syrian government denouncing the Israeli occupation forces' practices and human rights violations against Syrian citizens of the occupied Golan village of al-Ghajar.

The letter was handed over by Bashar Jafaari, Syria's Permanent Representative at the UN Geneva headquarters and it alerted to the fact that for several weeks Israel was preparing to partition the village thru building a wall to separate the residents from their lands and sources of income.

The letter discloses that Israel has announced to the residents of al-Ghajar its intention to deport the inhabitants from the northern part of the village to the southern part, which it intends to annex, and that Israel has notified the residents to leave their houses in the northern part within the end of March, otherwise they will be blocked by the wall which Israel plans to erect, confiscating 900 hectares of the villagers' lands.

The villagers, who have been living under Israeli occupation since 1967, hold rightful property deeds to their lands in the village. Syria holds the UN Human Rights Commission responsible for pressuring Israel to abstain from partitioning the village of al-Ghajar, and calls on it to take the necessary legal action and to distribute the letter at the 62nd session of the UN Human Rights Commission.

Meanwhile, the US has mobilized its allies in the Security Council to pressure the UN Human Rights Commission to dissolve itself and give way to the creation of an entirely new body.
