Al-Assad talks with Saudi king about UN Hariri investigation
Syria-Saudi Arabia, Politics, 1/9/2006

The Syrian President Bashar al-Assad held talks in Jeddah with the Saudi king Abdullah Bin Abdul Aziz concentrated on the implications of the UN investigation into the assassination of the former Lebanese prime minister Rafiq al-Hariri.

News reports quoted Arab diplomats as saying that the talks concentrated in particular in finding out a formula for "face-saving measures" for the Syrian president towards the demands set by the UN committee to interrogate him.

According to the sources, the sides concerned discussed the possibility that the Syria president will delegate a special envoy to meet with the UN investigators and to get their questions and return back to Damascus and then the Syrian president to send back written answers to the investigation committee.

The visit of the Syrian president to Saudi Arabia came after the visit held by the Saudi foreign minister prince Saud al-Faisal on Sunday to Damascus and his meeting with his Syrian peer Farouq al-Sharaa in order to prepare for the meeting between the Syrian president and the Saudi king.

This meeting comes after less than one week from the summit meeting between the Saudi king and the Egyptian President in order to discuss the developments of the assassination crisis of al-Hariri. This is in the course of Saudi- Egyptian efforts to contain the crisis.
