Worst week of violence since invasion of Iraq

125 Iraqis were killed in a series of explosions, the most violent of which were two suicide attacks in Karbala in the south, and Ramadi in the north, and thereby this week becomes the most violence since the American invasion of Iraq in 2003.

In Karbala, a suicide bomber exploded himself near the "gold dome" of Imam al-Hussein and killed 50 persons and injured 140. TV sketches showed large spots of blood and a lot of destruction.

One hour later, another suicide bomber detonated himself in Ramadi among 1000 of police volunteers according to American estimates, while they were preparing for tests, and this resulted in killing 70 and injuring 65.

In other attacks, six Iraqis were killed including four policemen in an attack against a vehicle in Baqouba northern east of Baghdad.

The casualties on Thursday are considered the heaviest in four months, thereby Iraq has started the new year by 240 being killed and other 280 injured, at a time when the Iraqis were all hope that the elections of December 15th 2005 will be conducive to the reduction of violence.
