Mubarak discusses in Paris the developments of Damascus file
Egypt-Syria-France, Politics, 1/5/2006

The Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak held talks in Paris on Wednesday with the French President Jacques Chirac.

The Egyptian Middle East news Agency MENA said that Mubarak discussed with Chirac at the Elysee palace the developments of conditions in the Middle East, especially the Syrian- Lebanese file, in light of the demands set by the UN committee to investigating the murder of al-Hariri to interrogate the Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and other senior officials.

Mubark reviewed to Chirac the results of his talks on Tuesday with the Saudi king Abdullah Ibn Abdul Aziz over this issue. This move came while a senior Saudi official will be arriving in Damascus on Wednesday.

Observers confirm that Saudi Arabia and Egypt's intensive efforts to alleviate the international pressures on Damascus and avoiding the escalation of conditions by other steps including economic or diplomatic sanctions.

The spokesman for the Egyptian presidency Suleiman Awad said in statements quoted by the al-Ahram paper that Egypt and Saudi Arabia consider that Syria's cooperation with the UN investigation committee in al-Hariri probe "a must to avoid it every evil and all international pressures."

Al-Ahram described Mubarak's talks with the Saudi king as a beginning of a regional and international move to rescue the Syrian- Lebanese situation.

This move stems, according to analysts from Arab fears of repeating the Iraqi crisis scenario with Syria.
