Al-Jazeera: Abbas threatens elections delay, demands calming down
Palestine-Israel, Politics, 1/3/2006
The Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas threatened that to postpone the legislative elections due on January 25th if Israel prevents the voters living in East Jerusalem from voting.
Abbas added, in statements to al-Jazeera satellite TV immediately upon his arrival in Qatar, that there is agreement between the Palestinian groups on the need of having the vote in Jerusalem, an assertion that was denied by a spokesman for the Islamic resistance movement Hamas.
The Palestinian president renewed his appeal to the Palestinian groups to continue abiding by clam-down agreement with Israel, and considered this agreement as the only way to achieve success in the legislative elections.
The Palestinian president, who is associated with the Fatah group. Fatah is competing with Hamas in the elections. Hamas is anticipated to do well in the elections because of Palestinian dissatisfaction with the established traditional political powers, viewed as corrupt, and an election delay, is seen as meant to help Fatah against Hamas. Israel, strongly opposes Hamas, and can be seen as helping create pretexts to delay the elections.
The resistance groups rejected to extend the truce while the Israeli occupation army continues unabated with its military escalation against the Palestinian lands, in the course of imposing what it called a security zone in Gaza and pursuit of resistance members.
Two Palestinians were killed and another was injured in an Israeli assassination using a targeted air attack against their car in Jabalia camp for the Palestinian refugees in Gaza on Monday evening, according to the Palestinian police and eye witnesses. Witnesses said that one Israeli plane was flying in the sky of the city before the missile attack.
Al-Jazeera satellite TV said that the car belonged to two prominent members in Saraya al-Quds, the military wing for the Islamic Jihad movement, and that one of the three men is a leading figure in the movement, adding that the missile injured other four bystanders who were standing in front of their houses, according to the medical sources.
