Iraqi leaders discuss government formation
Iraq, Politics, 1/2/2006

In line with the pace of violence, political discussions between different Iraqi sides have increased in order to reach an understanding on formation of a new government to succeed the government of the current interim prime minister Ibrahim al-Jaafari, whose term of office expired.

In this regard, Jafaari on Sunday held talks in Irbil, the capital of Iraq Kurdistan district, with the region President Masoud al-Barazani that dealt with the formation of the government and the nature of alliances that will govern them. News leaked from the meeting said that Barazani stressed the need of having a national unity government, and that his meeting with Jafaari is an introduction for wider talks to be held later in Baghdad.

In another development, a delegation representing the Iraqi al-Tawafuq Front which represents the Arab Sunni arrived in Irbil in order to hold talks with Barazani dealing with the new government and means of getting out of the current deadlock which followed announcing the partial results of the elections.

Al-Tawafuq Front delegation included the secretary general of the People Of Iraq Conference, Adnan al-Duleimi, the secretary general pf the Islamic Party, Tareq al-Hashimi, and the other leading figure in the front Sheikh Khalaf al-Alyan. This is considered the first time in which members of al-Tawafuq front hold discussions with the Kurds leaders, after the legislative elections which took place on December 15th.

Iraq Kurdistan witnessed earlier consultations between the chairman of the United Coalition List, Abdul Aziz al-Hakim, and the Kurdish leaders in Irbil and al-Suleimaneyah..
