Consultations to contain the Iraqi elections crisis
Iraq, Politics, 12/30/2005

Concerning the political crisis taking place in Iraq after vast sectors of the Iraqi citizens rejected the results of the Iraqi legislative elections, the Sunni leadership which took place in the elections said it will not accept taking part in the formation of a coalition government with the Shiite and the Kurds before the UN makes an investigation in the results of the elections. A matter which is expected to further escalate the political situation.

The spokesman for the Sunni Arab bloc Zafer al-Ani said that the Sunni leadership might take part in the meetings to be held today, with the Iraqi President Jalal al-Talibani in order to consider the proposed political solutions to settle the political crisis, but without taking part in a coalition government.

The Arab Sunni leadership called for reviewing the elections which took place on December 15, doubting its results and threatened to boycott its parliament if their demands are ignored.

This position by the Sunnis comes at a time when the chairman of the United Coalition, Abdul Aziz al-Hakim, and the interim Iraqi President met on Thursday in Suleimaneyah, in the course of their efforts to contain the anger of the Arab Sunnis, and to convince them to take part in a coalition government.

The Iraqi National List which is led by the former Iraqi prime minister Eyad Allawi also refused to take part in any dialogue with other sides to form the government before an international side audits the results of the elections and check the fraud operations in these elections.

Meantime, hundreds of Iraqis demonstrated on Thursday in Karkouk in protest of the preliminary results of the elections which indicate a great progress for the Shiite United Iraqi Coalition. On daily bases, other Iraqi cities are witnessing demonstrations for the same reasons.
