11 Iraqis killed, religious affiliation cited
Iraq, Politics, 12/30/2005
Sources in the Iraqi police said that gunmen killed 11 Iraqi Shiites from one family to the south of the capital Baghdad on Thursday evening.
The same source said that the 6 gunmen broke into the house of the Iraqi family and killed after rejecting threats addressed to them to leave the house "because it is in a quarters which is inhabited by a Sunni majority." There have been various reports indicating the ongoing and growing split Iraq is witnessing in separation between the Sunnis and the Shiites, who used to share in the past living quarters and inter-marry, a practice that seems to have been severely damaged, and where now, religious affiliation seems to have become a greater determining factor than national identity. Also, while this seems to be a reality, some use events that are not religiously motivated, to label these event as religiously motivated, in order to create further division in the Iraqi society to suit different political or religious motivations.
In another incident, the Iraqi army announced on Thursday that two American jets dropped two bombs each is 225 kg weight against al-Hueijeh village, north Iraq, and killed ten Iraqis suspected to have implanted explosives in a nearby road.
A statement by the American army said that two pilots were on a routine sorties when they monitored three men digging holes on a main highway side and implanted bombs in it. The statement added that the three men jumped into the car when they heard the sound of the two planes before they were joined by a second car.
The statement added that two planes bombarded the cars during their attempt to hide in al-Hueijeh village and this resulted in destroying the two cars and killing its occupants.
The American army said that American soldiers found after that in the village weapons and equipment for bomb making. They also found a bomb on the roadside in the place where the men were monitored for the first time.
In another field development, four Iraqi police men were killed and other five injured when one suicide bomber exploded himself targeting a police vehicle which was parking near the ministry of interior in Baghdad on Thursday morning.
