Zeibari indicates Iraq needs wide governing coalition
Iraq, Politics, 12/29/2005

With the tense political situation in Iraq, the pace of attacks and acts of violence resulted in killing 11 Iraqis including one colonel in the army and another one in the police, as well as kidnapping 8 persons including a female doctor working in Tikrit hospital.

On the other hand, leaders of the Shiite and Kurdish blocs in Iraq intensified their efforts to get the Sunni parties involved in a plenary coalition government that is under preparations in light of the results of the recent legislative elections.

On the other hand, the Iraqi foreign minister Hoshiar Zeibari defended the formation of a national unity government in which several political sides are taking part. This was following the talks which were held on Tuesday between Abdul Aziz al-Hakim and the chairman of Kurdistan district Masoud al-Barazani.

Zeibari told journalists that the list of the Kurdistani Coalition and the United Iraqi Coalition can form the government, but he said this is not in the "interest of Iraq and its people in this phase." In another development, the Independent Higher Commission For Elections said it rejects the call to repeat the elections, as being called for, considering that there is no need for that.

Observers from the Elections Commission said in a press conference in Baghdad that the elections were held in a transparent atmosphere that are in line with international norms and standards. The commission also announced it will nullify the results in certain circles where violations are proved to have taken place.
