Al-Assad, Mubarak discussed relations between Syria, Lebanon
Syria-Egypt, Politics, 12/21/2005
The issue of the Syrian- Lebanon relations overwhelmed the talks the Syrian President Bashar al-Assad held in Cairo yesterday with his Egyptian peer Hosni Mubarak.
The Syrian foreign Minister Farouq al-Sharaa who accompanied al-Assad said that there are "more important points" than the issue of the border demarcation between Syria and Lebanon reflected in "improving the atmosphere of relations between the two countries."
Sharaa was referring thereby to the tense relations between the two states after Lebanon's demand at the UN Security Council for the formation of an international court to consider the assassination of the former Lebanese prime minister Rafiq al-Hariri, following the assassination of the Lebanese journalist Jubran Tweini.
Principally, Syria agreed to demarcate its borders with Lebanon and proposed to postpone that until after the end of the Israeli occupation of the Shabaa Farms located in south Lebanon.
Neither of the two presidents talked about the results of their talks. However, the Egyptian foreign minister Ahmad Abu al-Gjeit said it dealt with UN investigation report, and its implications, and the Syrian- Lebanese relations and means of giving them a push forward.
