Mehlis submits his report to Annan
Syria-Lebanon-UN, Politics, 12/12/2005
The German judge Detlive Mehlis, chairman of the UN investigation committee in the Rafiq Hariri assassination probe handed over his second report over the results of investigations to the UN secretary general Kofi Annan.
The report covers the 6 past months of the committee's work which witnessed the interrogation of five Syrian officials in Vienna.
Annan received at his residence in New York Mehlis who supported the request of the Lebanese government to extend the work of the committee for additional 6 months. But Mehlis announced his intention to give up the presidency of the committee immediately after the end of its present term on Thursday.
By his turn, Annan will circulate the report today on the UN security council member states before Mehlis will discuss his report tomorrow Tuesday. The UN Security Council is expected to extend the authorization of the committee and the chairman of the committee considers the need of continued investigations, considering that the recent meetings with Syrian officials were more fruitful than the investigation session held in Damascus.
