UN: Israeli acts in Golan in defiance of UN resolutions
Syria-Israel-UN, Politics, 12/10/2005
The United Nations demanded once again Israel on Thursday night to abide by international resolutions relevant to the occupied Syrian Golan mainly the UN Security Council resolution 497 that considers Israel's decision to impose rules and legal and administrative rule on the Syrian Golan as null and void and of against international law.
The UN decision is the second of its kind this year over Golan. 156 states voted for it while Israel objected and the United States and 14 other states abstained.
The decision called upon "Israel due to its being the current authority of occupation to immediately annul its decision to annex the occupied Syrian Golan," asserting that all procedures and measures Israel adopted or will adopt that aimed to change the characteristics of Golan and its legal status "are null and pose as a flagrant violation of the international law and the Geneva Accord related to protecting civilians at war time which is of no legal effect."
The UN General Assembly urged Israel to halt its bid to impose the Israeli nationality on the Syrian citizens of Golan and to stop oppressive practices against Syrian people of the Golan.
The assembly condemned Israel's breaches of the Geneva agreement related to protecting civilians at war time and "reiterated call to member states not to acknowledge any of the procedures that are contrary to the international law" which Israel has executed in Golan.
The UN reiterated that "capturing territories of others by force is illegal according to the international law including the UN charter," noting that Madrid conference is held in 1991 on the basis of the two UN Security Council resolutions 242 and 338 to establish the just and comprehensive peace in the Middle East and voicing at the same time deep concern over the Mideast peace process halt on all tracks.
