The Iraq politics issue has two dimensions
Iraq-USA, Editorial, 12/8/2005
The US president George W. Bush and his administration have greatly intensified their public exposure in defense of their policy on the Iraq issue.
This coincided with the increased loss of public confidence in the administration and its supporters due to how it misled the American public into war, as charged by some, leaving those who supported the war with difficult position to oppose the war at this moment, since the US soldiers have already been committed on the ground
With the start of so-called "phase 2" investigation by the Senate into how the US intelligence was used to lead the country into a war, and the increased attention this subject was getting, the administration came out with strong attacks against those who made such claim because this greatly undermines the administration's public support in how the administration and its supporters seek to frame the political debate about this issue.
The US administrations efforts also coincide with the Iraqi elections next week, elections which in the past served to highlight progress in Iraq and provide a boost to the administration in the public opinion.
The Iraq issue, though a political issue, it has important dimensions. One, has to do with how a nation was misled into a war against an innocent people, and the destruction and suffering their country has and continues to endure as a result of the decision, and the second dimension has to do with the forced reality imposed on everyone that stems from this decision, a reality which is that a victim was wrongly shot, but he still needs to be attended to appropriately.
In politics, as in real life, all healing begins with the admission of the mistake. From that point, things can start to be dealt with from the proper perspective. There are those who will calculate the political ramifications of such an admission in terms of political cost. But, the country is owed from its leaders the truth. There is a place that is too important to leave to politics. This is the realm of data. The government and its leaders are to provide the data they have for a citizen to make an informed decision about political matters, and not serve someone's political agenda. The enormous suffering caused to the untold number of people in the two nations directly effected, Iraq and USA, and many others, should set the standard of what should be expected from this debate.
