Mauritania president at Islamic summit in Saudi Arabia
Mauritania-Saudi Arabia, Politics, 12/7/2005

The chairman of the military council for the ruling Justice And Democracy Council in Mauritania Col. Ala Weld Muhammad Faal headed for Saudi Arabia in order to take part in the special summit of the Organization of the Islamic Conference OIC due on Wednesday and Thursday.

The official news agency said that President Weld Muhammad Faal will carry out his first visit to the Gulf region since the toppling of the former President Muaaweya Weld al-Taye in August this year.

Official sources explained that Weld Muhammad asked for convening talks with the leaders of the countries taking part in the summit. He is expected to meet with the Saudi King Abdullah Bin Abdul Aziz with the aim of normalizing relations between the two states which were severed under the rule of his predecessor.

Two years ago, the former President of Mauritania ordered the closure of an Institute for Islamic Studies which used to receive students from various parts of Africa and two centers for al-Dawa ( Call) and a headquarters for a Saudi charity organization in the capital Nouakchott, in the course of what is called fight against terrorism.

It is expected that the President of Mauritania to receive a financial support to projects needed by the country during the interim governance operation the country undergoes.

Worthy mentioning that the former President Muaaweya Weld al-Taye was toppled in a military coupe led by Weld Muhammad Faal during his participation on August 3 in the funeral of the late Saudi King Fahd Bin Abdul Aziz in al-Riyadh.
