Saad al-Hariri accuses Syria of obstructing his father's murder investigation
Lebanon-Syria-UN, Politics, 12/6/2005

The chairman of the Lebanese al-Mustaqbal (future) parliamentary group, Saad al-Hariri, accused Syria of trying to affect the UN investigation to the murder of his father.

He said in statements on Monday that he did not meet any Syrian man, where that man alleged that he received a bribe to intice him to give his testimony against Damascus.

Replying to a question on the testimony of Hussam Saad, known as the "masked witness" who recanted his testimony against Syria, Hariri told a media forum in Dubai that there are people who are interested to change the focus of the investigation. I have never met, nor had a link to. And eventually no bribe was given to anyone in the investigation."

Hariri described what is taking place as "a campaign and part of the media campaign started by some people in their efforts to undermine the UN committee." Hariri also persisted on the need of forming an international committee to try the killers of his father, despite the objection of Hizbullah to form a committee of that sort.

On the other hand, the Lebanese minister of social affairs said that a political decision was taken to increase the profile of the issue of the "missing Lebanese" and the detainees in the Syrian jails, and to find out the fact behind the mass grave that was just discovered in the town of Anjar, in the Bekaa.

The Lebanese prime minister Fouad Sinioura recommended the minister of interior to request for the Red Cross (ICRC) to follow up this case.
