Efforts to release western hostages in Iraq
Iraq-UK, Local, 12/6/2005

The British foreign office secretary Jack Straw announced readiness of his country to hear the kidnappers of the British hostage Norman Kimmper who was kidnapped in Iraq in November together with other three western peace activists if the kidnappers want to be contacted.

The BBC confirmed that a contact was made with the kidnappers, but Straw refused to confirm that.

Meantime, the British active member and prominent figure in the movement which stands against the war in Iraq, Anas al-Takriti, started talks in Baghdad with the Iraqi Islamic Party in an attempt to ensure the release of the four hostages.

Al-Takriti said he did not make direct contacts with the kidnappers but held talks with several groups in order to reach the kidnappers.

Scholars and intellectuals from the Arab and Islamic worlds, in a statement, appealed the kidnappers of the four western hostages to release them quickly, because they affiliate, according to the statement to a peaceful organization known for its support to the causes of oppressed peoples.

The statement described the kidnapping of unarmed civilians regardless of their religion "as illegitimate and inflecting great damage to the just cause of the Iraqi people in confronting the occupation."
