Muslim Brothers doubt on results of Egyptian elections
Egypt, Politics, 12/3/2005

The Muslim Brothers group doubted the accuracy of the results of the third round of the Egyptian elections which took place on Friday, and accused the government of choosing judges, who's integrity is "suspect", to monitor the vote counting operations.

The leading figure for the Muslim Brothers, Issam al-Arya,n said that "the Egyptian regime chose several 'suspect' judges in their commitment to transparency, and put them in the positions to supervise the vote couting operations so as to prevent the winning of the candidates of the Muslim Brothers in the first round of this phase, as had happened in the previous phase."

Al-Aryan accused the Egyptian government of intimidating and detaining its candidates and their supporters in all election circles, repeating his statement that the government had used "all means in order to prevent the access of the group to achieve its objective in the current elections to win 100 seats."

He added that the group will not give up this objective "regardless to the acts of detention and fraud" demanding the release of all detainees during the election process.

The Egyptian Government said that the results of first round of third phase of parliamentary elections held in 9 governorates showas that "Only 9 candidates among 1770 ones succeeded in the elections. The results revealed that 8 of the winners belong to the National Democratic Party and independents on the principles of the party while the 9th winner belongs to Al Wafd. 126 NDP candidates will enter the runoffs, 36 independents, 2 for Al Wafd, 1 for the Nasserite Party, 1 for Al Karama Party and the others are independents."
