US concern about Hariri investigation if Mehlis leaves

The UN has stressed that it is possible to extend the mission of the UN investigation committee in the murder of the former Lebanese prime minister Rafiq al-Hariri even if the current chairman of the committee Detlev Mehlis decides to leave the investigation.

US representative to the UN John Bolton disclosed that his country asked the UN secretary general Kofi Annan to convince Mehlis to remain as head of the committee, noting that he at the same time asked Annan to nominate a likely successor for Mehlis if the latter persists to leave his job.

In his message to Annan, Bolton expressed his concern to that the Syrian government will use of the occurrence of a comprehensive change in the leadership of the investigation committee "so as to stops its total cooperation."
