Syria committed to peace, envoy to UN says
Syria-Israel-UN, Politics, 12/2/2005

Syria has repeatedly expressed commitment to the just and comprehensive peace in the Middle East, and she is calling for the Israeli withdrawal from the occupied Arab lands according to the international relevant resolutions, Syria's Permanent Envoy to the United Nations Faisal Miqdad said Thursday.

"Syria, who renews adherence to the international legitimacy and resolutions, calls for implementing the UN resolutions without selectivity or (double standards)," Miqdad added during a UN General Assembly meeting to discuss "situation in the Middle East." He said that the Israeli occupation of the Syrian Golan, Palestine and South Lebanon represents a flagrant violation of UN resolutions and the peace process launched in Madrid 1991.

"The continuation of the Israeli occupation of the Arab lands doesn't only threaten peace in the Middle East, but it also threaten the whole world," Miqdad added.

The Syrian envoy said that Israel still violates the rights of Syrian Golan citizens, disregarding UN relevant resolutions and the Geneva Convention.

"What makes situation in the region more dangerous is Israel's huge arsenal of the nuclear, chemical and biological weapons which constitute a destabilizing factor in the region," Miqdad added.

A big number of countries expressed support and solidarity with Syria in her efforts to achieve the just and comprehensive peace, holding Israel responsible for blocking negotiations on the Syrian track. Venezuela, Malaysia, Cuba, China and Russia expressed deep concern over the Israeli occupation of the Syrian Golan, showing support to all UN relevant resolutions against the Israeli occupation of the Arab lands.

They considered that the Syrian-Israeli track is very important for the peace process in the Middle East, stressing that peace couldn't be achieved without a solution for the conflict in the region.
