Barcelona summit underlines need to peace in Middle East

The European-Mediterranean Summit on Monday underlined commitment to achieve the just and comprehensive peace in the Middle East based on Madrid Conference, the Land-for-Peace formula, UN resolutions 242 and 338 as well as the Arab peace initiative of Beirut Summit.
The participating countries in the two-day Summit of Barcelona called in a final statement for exerting efforts and making progress on all peace tracks.
They expressed commitment to build an area of peace, stability and prosperity along the Mediterranean basin through cooperation and dialogue.
On its part, the EU stressed continuation of its financial aid to the reform program in the partnership Mediterranean states.
The final statement also underlined adherence to ban the proliferation of the nuclear, chemical and biological weapons, showing keenness to free the whole region from weapons of mass destruction.
The participating countries pledged to make additional efforts to complete the EU-Med Free Trade Zone in the year 2010 as well as encouraging investments, increasing and improving the standard of living in general. They also announced commitment to cooperate on issues of immigration, justice, security, fighting terrorism and extremism addition to boosting and enhancing dialogue among different cultures.
