Russian analyst: Israel had motivation in the Hariri crime
Syria-Lebanon-Russia, Politics, 11/25/2005

Vladimir Bogdanov, political analyst at the Russian Government's Rosiskaya Gazitta daily newspaper asserted yesterday that Syria is had no interest in the assassination of former Lebanese Premier Rafiq al-Hariri.

He made clear that the premature accusations and judgments addressed by the US to Damascus come in the framework of pressure put on Syria with the aim of changing its policy towards Middle East issues.

In a statement, the Russian analyst indicated that in his capacity as a specialist in Middle East affairs, he has repeatedly visited the region, and he understands how Syria worked to establish stability and contributed to end the war in Lebanon.

Therefore, "Damascus had no interest in assassinating al-Hariri and undermining security in Lebanon"he said, asserting that the Israeli intelligence and some Lebanese sides were interested in this matter.

Bogdanov underlined that Israel intends to destabilize Lebanon, replace it with a financial center in the Middle East. It also aims at weakening the positions of Syria and Iran who are two regional states that have big influence in the region.

He expressed confidence that the official Russian stance is supporting Syria, and that Russia will foil at the UN Security Council any moves for imposing sanctions on Syria.
