Mehlis returns back to Lebanon
Lebanon-Syria-UN, Politics, 11/23/2005
Chairman of the UN investigation committee into the murder of the former Lebanese prime minister Rafiq al-Hariri, Detlev Mehlis, returned back to Lebanon on Tuesday after he met in Spain with the legal advisor at the Syrian foreign ministry Riad al-Dawoudi on means of questioning six Syrian officers including the brother in law of the Syrian president in the assassination issue.
Al-Dawoudi negotiations with Mehlis in Barcelona dealt with the place where the 6 officers will be interrogated after the latter had refused a Syrian proposal to be investigated at the UNDOF headquarters in the Golan or the headquarters of the Arab league in Cairo, according to an authorization to this effect given to him by the UN Security Council resolution no. 1636.
So far no official Syrian position was issued to this effect after the Syrian foreign ministry said on Sunday that Damascus is studying the results of the meeting.
