Iraqis agree on right of resistance, foreign withdrawal
Iraq-Regional, Politics, 11/22/2005

The preparatory meeting for the Iraqi national reconciliation conference concluded its works after three days of discussions at the headquarters of the Arab League in cairo, Egypt, crowned with the agreement on a draft final statement making a distinction between terrorism and legitimate resistance.

At the conference's final session, the secretary general of the Arab League Amr Moussa delivered a speech in which he commended the serious discussions during the meetings and of reaching a consensus over many issues.

During the session a message was read sent by the President of Iraq's Kurdistan, Masoud al-Barazani, to the meeting in which he insisted on the option of reconciliation. Barazani stressed that the federal democratic option is the means to bring together all Iraqi forces. The participants also listened to a message sent by the Shiite leader Muqtada al-Sader in which he commended the meeting.

Amr Moussa read the final statement in which the participants stressed the inspiration of the Iraqi people for a pullout of the foreign forces.

The five-page statement admits resistance as a legitimate right while it gives up terrorism and makes a distinction between it and resistance, and calls for deploring acts of violence which target the Iraqis and worship houses.

It calls for scheduling foreign forces's withdrawal from Iraq in the same schedule as that of the Iraqi forces's ability to assume security themselves. The statement also calls for the release of innocent detainees and to investigate torture practices. It also urges the Arab states to maintain security and diplomatic cooperation with Iraq.
