Egypt detains four Muslim Brothers members
Egypt, Politics, 11/19/2005

The Egyptian police detained four members of the Muslim Brothers group because they circulated publications that cast doubt about the results of the parliamentary elections, whose first phase started on November 9th.

A security source said that the security forces detained the four men in front of a mosque for distributing publications for a banned group. Ikhwan al-Muslimin (Muslim Brothers) group is a legaly banned group in Egypt.

Sources in the Muslim Brothers group said that the four detained men were distributing publications that cast doubt on the results of the parliamentary elections in which the group participated through two independent candidates, because of the legal embargo imposed on the group, and because these publications expose how the government used bribes and bought votes and other violations to ensure the winning of its candidates.

This incident came one day after announcing the results of the runoff of the first round of the parliamentary elections in which candidates of the Muslim Brothers achieved good results.

Some 34 Muslim Brother members won elections among 47 independents in the first round of the parliamentary elections over 146 open seats. The Muslim Brothers had 15 seats in the parliament whose term of office had expired.

Officials in the Muslim Brothers said they do not believe that their only candidates in the elections received less votes than her rival from the Democratic National party in the Naser city area election.

The Egyptian elections to choose 444 member in the parliament are carried out in three phases. The second phase starts on Sunday and runoff elections are carried out six days later.
