Egyptian ruling party retreats in parliamentary elections
Egypt, Politics, 11/18/2005
According to the results of the Egyptian parliamentary elections the ruling party lost 96 seats in this round for the opposition and the independents. The decrease was not limited to that, rather several of its symbols failed including the chairman of the education committee at the parliament, whose term of office expired, such as Husam Badrwai and the chairman of the industry and energy committee Amin Mubarak, the chairman of the agriculture and irrigation committee Ahmad Esawi and the chairwoman of the media committee Feyda Kamel.
However, sources at the ruling party expected that a great majority will be reestablished with the return back of the persons who split from the party and ran campaigns as independents.
The chairman of the higher committee defended the joining of independents to the ruling party and said he had received a statement to that before the beginning of the second round from the secretary general of the national party.
