On internet censorship in some Arab states
Regional, Politics, 11/17/2005
The Tunisia IT summit coincides with an announcement made by the Human Rights Watch, which has New York as a headquarters, that Internet users were jailed and websites were barred in the Middle East and north Africa.
In a report published in Tunisia, the organization stressed the question of censorship on the Internet and the cases in which users of the Internet were stopped because of their activities in the countries of the region that covered Tunisia, Iran, Syria and Egypt.
According to the organization, Tunisia still jails those who express their view on the Internet and cancels subscription of sites that criticize the government, while Syria monitors "information and correspondents, thanks to the conditions set by the emergency law enacted in the country since more than 40 years."
The report which is composed of 144 page indicated the closure of the first site for the Muslim Brothers in Egypt and the detention of Abdul Karim Nabil Suleiman in October this year in Alexandria because of criticism to Muslims and Islam.
The organization based its report on analyzing thousands of Internet websites and interviews with writers and Internet users and activists in the field of human rights.
