Arabic as a language of science and civilization, conference

Syria's Minister of Higher Education Hani Murtada said Monday that the Arabic Language is the most distinguished way to express what is going around the mind, feeling and senses.

"Arabic has proven, throughout history, that it is one of the lively languages... it is the language of science and civilization... it is still capable to come up with modern civilization and knowledge," Minister Murtada said in an opening speech to the 4th annual Arabic Language Assembly Conference held in Damascus.

The Conference opened under the patronage of President Bashar al-Assad who was represented by Minister Murtada at the Lectures' Hall of al-Assad Library.

President of the Arabic Language Assembly, Dr. Shaker Faham, for his part, referred to the important role of the Arabic Language in building the nation and maintaining the Arab identity.

He added that the Arabic language preserves the Arab history and society, noting to the role played by Arab grandfathers who kept it from any possible lose or distortion.

Minister of Culture, Mahmoud Assayed, in addition to a number of Arab and foreign ambassadors as well as several Islamic and Christian clergymen were present at the opening session of the 4-day Conference titled "Arabic Language and Society."
