Annan welcomes Syria's desire to cooperate with UN

UN Secretary General Kofi Annan on Friday welcomed President Bashar al-Assad's pledge to cooperate with a UN inquiry into the killing of a former Lebanese prime minister.

"I was encouraged by what he said in the speech that he will cooperate with the UN investigation. It is good for the region and the international system so I am happy that he did Indicate he would cooperate," Annan told reporters in Amman. President Bashar al-Assad said in his speech on Thursday Syria would cooperate with a UN inquiry into the killing of former Lebanese prime minister Rafiq al-Hariri, but would not sacrifice her own national interests.
