Egypt, Politics, 11/12/2005
The Egyptian police arrested seven members of the Muslim Brothers group during demonstrations that erupted in the center of Cairo after Friday's prayers, in protest of what they claimed to be falsification in the first phase of the parliamentary elections.
The demonstrators, who gathered around the mosque of Mustafa Mahmoud in al-Muhandiseen city, chanted slogans confirming the occurrence of vast fraud operations to fail the candidate of the Muslim Brothers, Hazem Salah Abu Ismael ,in al-Diqqi district in favor of the candidate of the ruling national party and former minister Amal Othman.
Al-Jazeera satellite TV said that the demonstration in which thousands of persons took place represents the last means for pressure by the Muslim Brothers before announcing the official and final results of the first phase of the elections later.
Government media, including the Nile Sat for official news and the evening al-Ahram daily, said earlier that the candidate for the Muslim Brothers in al-Diqqi circle won at a difference of 1500 votes from his nearest rival..
The Muslim Brothers group said it won four seats in the first phase and will compete for 41 seats in the repetition round next Tuesday.
Among those who are taking part in the repetition election on the list of the Muslim Brothers is the teacher in the Arabic literature in al-Azhar university Makaram al-Deiri in Naser city district northern east of Cairo.
The general guide for the group Muhammad Mahdi Akef said that the cheating of the ruling party depends of the mass restrictions of the employees of the state's administrative department and employees of the public companies in the election lists and motivating them to vote for the national ruling party. The guide of the Muslim Brothers also stressed that the national party bought votes at 500 Egyptian pounds ( USD 90) per vote at Naser city ballot centers.
