Rice in north Iraq calls for vast participation in elections
Iraq-USA, Politics, 11/11/2005

The US Secretary of state Condaleezza Rice arrived in Musil city in north Iraq on Friday in a visit which was not declared beforehand for security reasons.

Rice urged the Iraqis to eliminate their "sectarian differences" and take part in the next elections which are due on September 15. Rice who had arrived from Bahrain in the context of a Middle East tour will stay for one day in Iraq during which she will be meeting with the American ambassador and American military officials.

On Thursday, the British foreign office secretary Jack Straw arrived in Iraq and stressed that there is an intention for his country to withdraw its forces "as soon as possible" when the Iraqi forces become capable of preserving security.

Rice's visit to Iraq came in the course of a large deterioration in the security situation in the country, reflected in the number of persons killed as a result of the attacks and the explosions or those whose bodies were found in various parts of Iraq, whose circles have been witnessing continued acts of violence.
